Answering the Call
As you read this, Fr. Don Willard and I are approaching our first anniversary as the leadership team at Liguori Publications. It often feels like mere weeks since we started.
As did our predecessor, Redemptorist Fr. Mat Kessler, I like to keep you updated on what’s happening at Liguori. Talking with our readers is one of my favorite parts of my work.
A constant thread in the conversational tapestry between Fr. Don and me speaks to the work of Liguori and how it fits within the rich mission of the Redemptorists. This is, quite literally, something we talk about or act on every day. What is delightful to me is that the conversation continues to evolve. How we live the calling is something that requires ongoing work and deliberation.
The theme of this month’s issue is “We are called,” and it occurs to me that, like individuals, institutions can be called. Liguori Publications is called to enact its mission. As with a personal calling, sometimes the response is simple and clear. And sometimes it requires wrestling with difficult issues. I’d like to offer a quick look at a couple of articles in this issue that can help you with your personal spiritual calling:
- Columnist Johan van Parys discusses how the calling can take different forms, yet any form has the same underlying value.
- Columnist Kathleen M. Basi describes how the call can be complex—and why that’s a good thing.
- Dr. Massimo Faggioli guides us through Lumen Gentium, one of the principal documents that emerged from the Second Vatican Council. The document contains an explicit call to holiness.
