This event and others like it—planes turned into bombs, entertainment into carnage, education into massacre—reminds us with heartbreaking clarity that our world, for good or ill, is shaped by individual choices. Few of us will ever make a choice with such immediate and far-reaching implications as these, but we all make daily choices with consequences we can’t foresee.
