Created in Our Image
December 2013
"In Jesus, God took on the image of each of us so that we might become like Christ."
Since 2000, we have been blessed with an art gallery at The Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis, MN, named after Pope John XXIII. Between eight and ten exhibits every year feature local, national, and international artists. All the art is sacred art in a very broad sense. Our parishioners and the larger community love our exhibits. The most popular is undoubtedly the annual exhibit of nativity scenes.
During the Advent and Christmas seasons we exhibit between 175 and 200 crèches from around the world. The composition varies in matter and magnitude. Some are carved in wood or stone, and others are made from scrap materials such as newspapers, bottle caps, or soda cans. Some are made of fired clay either colorfully painted or left to its natural state. One is composed of painted pebbles. Sizes range from miniature to almost life-size.
