Fill the Well

"Modern life imposes a brutal set of expectations."
A few years ago, a poem made the rounds of the music ministry community. In essence, it said that to be a minister is to give even when it hurts, when you yourself are in need, and perhaps even when you think you have nothing left to give.
While there’s truth in that poem, it’s not the whole truth. Modern life imposes a brutal set of expectations. We push and push to cram one more thing into our already overstuffed schedules. And all the while, our bodies, minds, and souls cry out for rest—rest we seem unable to claim even when the opportunity arises.
Yes, Christian life is about ministering to others and spreading the gospel through the witness of lives poured out in service of others. Yet no one has an unlimited supply of emotional, spiritual, and physical energy. If all we do is give, give, give, eventually the well runs dry.
