Readers’ Choice Awards, Comments on 2021–22 Content
We asked you in our May-June magazine to name your favorite recent Liguorian articles for our Readers’ Choice Awards, which we are announcing below with a few of your comments. Thanks to readers who wrote, including one who said, “I can’t choose a favorite article but I would like you to know how much I enjoy the fiction article each month. I remember when Jim Auer wrote most of them!”
We will publish more Readers’ Choice Awards comments in our ‘Mail’ column in our next edition. Did your favorite articles make the cut?
Series, First Place: “Alcoholism,” five articles by Fr. Ted Lawson in late 2021 whose focus included understanding the disease, how it affects the alcoholic’s loved ones, and recovery options.
Comment: “Thank you for…the series on alcoholism. I have a family member who suffers from alcoholism, and I find the articles very helpful. Thank you for all that you do, and God bless you!”
Feature, First Place: “Learning to Accept and Adapt to COVID-19 Long Term,” Jim Auer’s account in March 2022 of his longtime battle with the virus.
Comment: “This article was my favorite. It was not only about COVID-19 long term but any illness or condition that is long term. I was a caregiver for my father many years ago. I had two young sons at the time. Jim was right when he said illness not only affects the person who has it, but it also takes a toll on the caregiver—maybe even more so. Everyone asks about the person who is ill, but nobody asks about the caregiver!”
Feature, Second Place: “Listening: The Highest Form of Love,” Bonnie Lemelle Abadie’s article in our July-August 2022 Liguorian about the value of really paying attention when someone talks to you.
Comment: “[Prior to reading this article] I had not thought of (listening) as love, but respect. Working together to solve problems is so much more productive when you understand the importance of listening.”
Fiction, First place: “Mind Your P’s and Q’s,” Dave Bachmann’s September 2021 feature on the lost art of cursive handwriting and how the Godlike power of unconditional love lifted the spirits of a young woman at just the right time and inspired her to start anew.
Comments “It is a wonderful story with a faith-filled punch at its ending, in my words, ‘There are no coincidences with God.’ The pace of his story is marvelous!”
Meditation, First Place: “Bobby Sunshine,” Sr. Mary Ann Miller’s remembrance in January 2022 of her brother, Bobby Miller (right), a man with Down syndrome, and their nudges by “the Holy, Happy Spirit.”
Comment: “I loved this story so much that I sought permission to share it with my parish prayer group, which you graciously granted.”
