Living on a Prayer
The kingdom of God is at hand
Our goal of following Christ is no less than a journey toward a new place and time, one that is ahead of us but begins now: the wedding banquet celebrated with the Bridegroom in the kingdom of God. (See Mt 22:2.)
Think of what goes into planning a wedding: tedious tasks, running around, mishaps, excitement, and joy. Plans change, people disappoint, tempers flare, apologies are made, people rise to the occasion. Real people act to make things work.
We are planning a wedding, the great feast of the Lamb of God, and praying that all will become new; that God’s people will be transformed and the world will change. At the heavenly banquet, then, it will not come as a surprise when our voices in communion proclaim with the Psalmist, “Let everything that has breath give praise to the Lord! Hallelujah!”
(150:6).
